English faculty wins literary award

HPU English Professor Mark Tjarks, Ph.D., has won First Place in the William Faulkner Literary Competition for one act plays for his play "The Unsalable Thing," which was presented this summer at the Strawberry Theatre Festival in New York and as a one evening staged reading at HPU’s Homelessness Awareness Week in April 2015. It also won the 2015 Best Play Award at the PlayBuilders’ Festival of Original Plays in Honolulu. 

Along with a $600 award, the play will receive a full production by the Tallahatchie River Players in next year’s River Fest in New Albany, Miss., birthplace of William Faulkner. The news of Tjarks' award was announced on Friday, Sept. 25, at the William Faulkner Literary Competition luncheon, which was held in New Albany. 

On Sep. 28 and 29, Tjarks’ "The Heroine" (winner of the Kauai Shorts Festival Comedy Award) will be part of the program of the HPU Theatre’s Student Showcase Showdown. Evening performances are Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 28 and 29, at 7 p.m., with a matinee on Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. All shows are at Kumu Kahua Theatre, 46 Merchant St., Honolulu, HI 96813, in downtown Honolulu across the street from Aloha Tower Marketplace. Admission is free!
